Alternative ways to verify your age online
It is looking increasingly likely that the Digital Economy Act (DEA) 2017 will have a formal start date in UK law before the Easter break. What is the DEA? Read our guide on what online services will be affected once final reviews of the Act are approved by the UK government.
Both the House of Lords and the House of Commons approved the guidance from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) on the DEA’s impending age-verification arrangements, designed to protect children and young teens from adult content online.
Once the Department for Culture, Media and Sport clarifies a formal start date, all commercial adult content services will be required to implement robust age-verification systems that comply with the new legislation, whilst protecting online consumers. Those adult service providers that don’t comply will have their services restricted and the Regulator won’t unblock adult sites until such systems are in place.
Historically, consumers have been required to provide photographic evidence of their passport or driving license to validate their identity and age. You may also have used a credit card for age verification, or even a debit card. With the threat of cyber-crime and fraudulent activity rifer than ever today, giving away your sensitive information to online merchants can justifiably leave you somewhat uneasy. Understandably, you don’t want your personal details to fall into the wrong hands.
Fortunately, there are alternative online ID verification methods that allow users to verify their age without sharing any other sensitive details with third-parties. Several of these alternative age verification methods are also compatible with AVSecure’s AgePass functionality, including:
Yoti Digital Identity
Yoti is an innovative age-verification solution enabling users to prove their identity online – and face-to-face. Customers can own their identity data for their exclusive Yoti account, which features 256-bit AES data encryption. A user’s identity profile can only be accessed by someone with access to both their Yoti profile and the logins to their third-party applications.
Age Verification Card
The Age Verification Card is the first Zero Knowledge Proof age verification solution and is trusted by AVSecure as a truly anonymous verification method. Only face-to-face age verification is required when you purchase an Age Verification Card from one of 60,000+ retail stores throughout the UK. Providing the store assistant is happy a consumer is aged 18 or over, they will hand over the card. The 16-digit code on the back of the Age Verification Card is then submitted into AgePass to gain immediate access to adult online services. Crucially, no additional proof is required other than at the point of sale, providing an excellent deterrent to cyber fraud.
