Internet safety for kids: How to block adult content from all devices
The internet is jam-packed with content that you may not want your kids or family to see when browsing on desktops, laptops or smartphones at home. Children shouldn’t have to be exposed to adult and pornographic content – and the impending Digital Economy Act (DEA) 2017 agrees. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to achieve internet safety for kids, giving you peace of mind that your little ones cannot access explicit content.
Internet filtering via DNS
It is possible to set up an internet filter that blocks direct access to adult websites. One of the simplest filters is to block access via DNS – the internet protocol that converts website names into IP addresses. By filtering at DNS level for adult websites, you can ensure their content is never loaded on-screen. Simply change your Wi-Fi settings to point the DNS servers to 188.8.131.52. This is applicable to Mac, Linux and Windows desktops, as well as iPhones, iPads and Android devices.
How to block adult websites on Android
It is possible to stop your children from accidentally discovering adult content whilst browsing the web via Android devices. Google gives users the option of creating parental controls in Google and the Play Store. In the Play Store app, tap the top left icon and head to Settings > Parental Controls before turning it on by setting a unique PIN code. You can also enable safe search in Google and Chrome browsers, blocking explicit content from all Google Search results.
How to block adult websites on iPhone
If you’re upgrading your child’s iPhone to iOS 12, you’ll want to know the changes made to limiting access to adult content. Ensure that Screen Time is switched on for your child’s iPhone or iPad. Enter the Screen Time passcode that you originally set to be able to turn on the ‘Content & Privacy Restrictions’. On the ‘Web Content’ section of Content & Privacy Restrictions, hit ‘Limit Adult Websites’. This will prohibit private browsing mode and restrict direct access to adult content for your children. If you’re aware of certain website addresses that you want to be safeguarded from your kids, you can always manually enter them into the ‘Never Allow’ section.
